1. IS CLEARING FOR YOU?
Clearing is the process by which universities with available courses places are matched with students seeking a place. You’re eligble to enter Clearing if you UCAS Track status says “You are in Clearing” or “Clearing has started”. Go to the UCAS website for details of the latest university course vacancies you’ll nee to call them up to secure a place. Last year more than 64,900 students found a course through clearing – so you’ll need to more fast to get available courses.
TOP TIP: Clearing opens several weeks before A-level results day, you can get a head start lf you are not holding any offers or are a Highers, BTEC or 1B student.
2. RESEARCHING COURSES
Be quick, but don’t rush to accept the first course you find. Research vacancies thoroughly to draw up a shortlist of universities to call – It’s worth dedicating time to this process before hitting the phones on results day. Once you’ve found a potential course, make use of all available resources to build up a proper picture of what the course is like to study and what current students think about it.
3. PREPARING FOR YOUR CALL
Gather together the things you might need when speaking to universities. Your UCAS Clearing number, so tutors can view your original application. The course code, name and details of the course content you’re enquiring about. Your personal statement – re-read this, in case you’re asked questions Think about the key points you want to make. Note down why that specific course appeals to you – highlight something specific about it that you uncovered during your research, why you should get the place and questions to ask them.

4. PHONING UNVERSITIES

BACHELORS DEGREE
WHAT IS A BACHELORS DEGREE?
A standard Bachelors degree is a three-year course which can be categorised into Bachelor of Arts (BA), Bachelor of Science (BSc), Bachelor of Education (BEd) and Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) degrees. In addition to the standard three-year undergraduate degree, a joint or dual-honors undergraduate degree will see students split their time across two different courses, meaning a larger choice of modules and increased job options after your graduate. There are also four-year bachelors degree, which involve spending one year at a work placement related to your field of study.

MEDICAL DEGREE
WHAT IS A MEDICAL DEGREE?
Before you become a UK doctor you first have to obtain a degree in medicine from a medical school. Courses normally last five or four years for a graduate entry programme. They involve basic medical sciences as well as clinical training on the wards. After graduation, you’ll enter the two-year Foundation Programme. You’II be provisionally registered with a license to practice while completing the first year. Full registration is awarded when you’ve completed year one.
UK MEDICAL DEGREE REQUIREMENTS
IGCSE
Medical schools such as Imperial and Cambridge do not have GCSE requirements, but you would also have greater competition for these universities as they are among the top universities in the country. Some other schools have lower GCSE requirements, such as King’s College London (minimum 8/6 for English and Maths).
A-LEVELS
Due to the academic rigor of studying medicine, most medical schools in the UK have high academic requirements. The very minimum is AAB, but most places will require AAA. Cambridge requires a minimum of A*A*A.
INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE
On average, 36-38 points is the minimum required for entry into most medical schools, including 3-19 points for Higher Level {HL) subjects. Cambridge requires 40-42 points while on the lower end of requirements, Birmingham and Buckingham require a minimum of 32 and 34 points respectively.
ENGLISH LANGUAGE
If you are required to take IELTS or TOEFL, a minimum IELTS score of 7.0-7.5 or a TOEFL score of 100 are typically required for admission.
PRE-MASTERS DEGREE
WHAT IS A PRE-MASTERS DEGREE?
Pre-Masters programmes in the UK are designed to prepare students fully for studying at postgraduate level. Courses range in length from ten weeks to twelve months and provide an essential grounding for successful postgraduate study. A Pre-Masters will greatly increase the English language and study skills required for successful postgraduate study, as well as familiarising international students with UK teaching methods.
PRE MASTERS REQUIREMENTS
You must have finished an undergraduate degree at a recognized institution with at least a pass. For a typical two-semester Pre-Masters, a minimum IELTS score of 5.5 is generally required. TYPES OF MASTERS DEGREES
TAUGHT MASTERS
There are four main types of taught programme, Master of Arts (MA), Master of Science (MSc), Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Master of Engineering (MEng), with each lasting 1-2 years full-time.On a taught programme, students are expected to attend weekly seminars, tutorials and lectures, much like an undergraduate degree, and assessment can be via exam, dissertation or project.
RESEARCH MASTERS
A Research degree will see students take more responsibility for their work and schedule, basing their study around a thesis while being supervised by an academic. The most popular research degree is a PhD, which can take 3-4 years to complete and consists of writing a thesis between 60,000 -100,000 words which is then presented in an oral examination. Other types of Research degree include the Master of Science (MSc), Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Master of Research (MRes). These degrees are similar to a PhD, but not as academically demanding with papers being much shorter.
